Security Advice for Defence Staff

During a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD staff have been told not to talk about classified information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

He stated that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a issue in every contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing risks of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those secret conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, the minister responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

This revelation follows reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause disruption to transport systems.
