The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any major prize-giving event approaches, one notices a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
