This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.
We present a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but inside Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.
A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The story commences when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.
The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.
Both characters face the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
